To Be

To Be
By Jordan Bates

Fast-forward nights of trickling
risking my
liver for friendships
like diamonds

amidst the expanding

sight-seeing mind-
bleeding my calling
falling never ever
will I
forget to be a good boy

like Mom always told me to
be nice

so climb do i ever
elevate my aura
aligning vibes with
universal verses hymns

pursuing perfect
like a mythical ray
of light amidst

because a God
is what I want to be when I
grow up

and I’m

back now

by people! people
I love

amigos like three notes
of symphonic beauty
tickling my ear
drums rustling
the leaves
of this soul

and I

a legacy

take nada for granted, yes,
I thank
the Essence each
for this chance
to be.

My Commandments

Today, I wrote down a list of my “commandments.” These are the ideals in which I most strongly believe at this point in my life. I know that if I live according to them, happiness, satisfaction, and peace of mind will follow. I encourage anyone who reads this to attempt the same exercise.

Without further adieu, here’s my list:

1. Always remain courageous, especially in the face of adversity.

2. Treat people with the kindness and respect that they deserve.

3. Strive for excellence in all aspects of life.

4. Consciously give thanks every day for your gifts and blessings.

5. Stay true to who you are, and do what you love to do. Read the rest of this entry »

Poem (Inspired by The Nightmare by Martin Puryear)

In flame we were born…
By Jordan Bates

run red. Shrapnel

crucifying the skies
with indifferent

staining my
last breath the color
of ignorance.

A paradoxical recipe:

One part
lifeblood; one part

In flame we must be destroyed.

warmth and i’m not alone. yeah,
that’s what you feel like
when we
press and fold our pasts
together into this
moment of something
i’ve grown used to living (without.)

you’re no one anyone every
one. someone could be you someday
i really do hope

Beneath these pretty lights…
By Jordan Bates

we soul shiver and writhe
and wilding swaying
flexing pulsations
churn together and forget
our names we engulf
the darkness.

dazzle me with d i s t o r t i o n
because I am enjambed… in
need of a hectic spectacle
in which to lose and find
myself simultaneously.

Interdreamensional Vacation
By Jordan Bates

We were floating aimlessly
down the picturesque rainbow
river one starry evening
when fifteen flying squirrels
landed quite suddenly upon our raft.

As is tradition,
we welcomed our furry brethren
with glorious orange
porridge and proceeded to dance the stellar
tarantella until everyone had chuckled

After thanking us profusely
for our merriment,
the leader of the wise tribe
produced a golf
ball-sized galaxy
and offered it as
a token of his gratitude.

We erupted in a round of applause
for his awesome deed
of generosity and
bid his company adieu
as they really had to be on their way
back to the realm
of infinite cookie dough.

If You’re Looking for a Sign, This is It

There was a time when Warren Buffet couldn’t spell invest,
A time when Albert Einstein was flunking tests,
A time when Tupac had never rhymed a phrase,
A time when Will Farrell wasn’t Ron Burgendy.
Do you know what I’m trying to say?
In life, you can be what you want to be.
We all start out as a bunch of no-names,
But with hard work you really can win the game.
The sad truth is that most people won’t.
They either don’t believe or they don’t care enough.
Life isn’t about finding yourself. We all create our own myth.
It’s up to you to make yours beautiful or settle for piss.
So fight for dreams. Raise your fists.
Find a passion, and do that shit.
If you don’t think you’re worth it than no one will.
You gotta know in your heart that you have the skill.
Stick with what you love, and you’ll be surprised.
Life wasn’t quite what you had surmised.
You can fly. You can glide. You can soar up in the sky.
But you have to realize that it won’t come easy.
You gotta jump some hurdles. It’s not all breezy.
So stop watching TV like a mindless drone.
Start creating your fantasy. Don’t be a clone.
When you finally break away from the status quo,
You realize you have potential to do so much more.
The purest form of pleasure is real accomplishment.
If you’re looking for a sign, then THIS IS IT.
You’re gonna be so proud when you get it done.
You can thank me later. For now, I’m gone.

“Thank You, Dad” (A Father’s Day Poem)

Thank You, Dad
By Jordan Bates

Dad, I don’t know how to start to thank you or where this poem will end.
I just want to tell you how special you are to me. My hero and my friend.

I remember as a child when you would read to me at night.
You taught me to always count my blessings and to always be polite. Read the rest of this entry »

45 Seconds: An EF5 Tornado Reveals Human Goodness

This story was forwarded to me in an e-mail, and I assume it has been circulating all over the United States. It is truly a heart-wrenching story that demonstrates the human capacity for goodness in the midst of catastrophe. Read the rest of this entry »

I am Human: Random Complaint About Security Checks

Almost anyone who has spent any amount of time on the Internet has had to deal with those stupid security checks where you are required to “type the above text” to prove that you are a human and not some automated robot.

I tend to get a little perturbed with these tests as they are actually very difficult to read at times!  In fact, I’ve had to re-type the above words three or four times before because I was repeatedly presented with a group of letters where one or two of the symbols could have easily been a couple different letters.

This is a little upsetting because I feel as if the computer is telling me that I am not a human!  I’m a human, dammit, now let me use your website!

If you enjoyed this mini-rant, you might enjoy a longer rant of mine.
